ADULT NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL SCREENING

Dr. Baker conducts neuropsychological screenings of adults to assess various aspects
of cognitive functioning. Screenings provide information about strengths and
weaknesses, and can identify problems that may not be obvious (e.g., attention-deficit
disorders, potential learning disability, developmental weaknesses, possible
neurological injuries, etc.). Results provide a baseline that is very helpful if the person
later sustains a neurological injury (e.g., concussion or stroke), or if the person
experiences cognitive decline with question of dementia or another neurological
illness/injury.

Adult neuropsychological screenings involve the following:
1. Completing various questionnaires related to cognitive and behavioral functioning.
2. Clinical interview of the client (and significant others or family members, if desired)
3. Psychometric testing (which lasts approximately 2 hours)

Formal tests in the following domains:
•Brief intellectual/academic screening (which is used as comparison for other abilities)
•Learning/memory (i.e., verbal and visual memory)
•Language functioning
•Attention/concentration
•Executive functions (e.g., problem-solving, self-monitoring, and planning)
•Visual-spatial/visual-motor abilities (e.g., visual-motor speed, nonverbal reasoning,
hand visual-motor dexterity/speed)

Once testing is completed, a report is prepared summarizing the test results (including
test scores) and recommendations, and a feedback session is held to explain the
results. If significant impairments/problems are found, the screening may be transitioned
into a full neuropsychological evaluation to further assess the nature of the problem. Full
neuropsychological evaluations involve more extensive testing in areas of difficulty.
