Executive Functioning Skills Group
Purpose:
This group is intended for individuals with problems related to “executive functioning” (e.g., staying
organized, multitasking, getting started on tasks, finishing tasks, self-monitoring of performance,
regulating behavior, etc.). Problems with executive functioning are common in individuals with attention-
deficit disorders, learning disorders, neurological injuries, and increased stress. The purpose of the
group is to provide clients with education about these problems and teach strategies for improving
these skills in everyday life.
Appropriate Clients and Format:
Groups are limited to six members, and the length of the group is six sessions. Sessions are
approximately one hour, and the day/time of each group is decided once group members have stated
their availabilities and preferences. Prior to the first session, clients will be sent an executive functioning
questionnaire to complete on their own. Each client will be provided with a report summarizing their
self-evaluation results (although individual test results will not be shared with the rest of the group).
Homework assignments are given in each session to encourage monitoring of behavior between
sessions and making specific changes in daily routines and behavior.
Cost:
The cost of the group is $60 per session, and the total cost for the group is $360. If a client needs to
miss a group for any reason, there is an opportunity to participate in an additional session (free of
charge) at the conclusion of the group to cover the content missed.
Topics to be covered in the 6 sessions:
1. Self-Evaluation, Overview, and Initial Steps
2. Getting Started On Tasks/Overcoming Procrastination
3. Improving Daily Organizational Skills
4. Improving Working Memory and Attention
5. Improving Self-Monitoring and Task Completion
6. Improving Shifting Attention, Mental Flexibility, and Inhibition
