CAREER/VOCATIONAL EVALUATION

Many students begin college without a clear idea about their academic major or the
type of work they want to do in the future. Sometimes students have an idea of a
possible major, but haven’t explored whether their personality traits, or their unique
strengths and weaknesses, are consistent with their field of interest. Dr. Baker
conducts career/vocational assessments to assist students and their parents with the
process of academic and career decision-making. These evaluations involve in-
depth vocational/career testing (i.e., exploring the majors and jobs that are most
consistent with the student’s personality), and also assesses cognitive strengths and
weaknesses to provide information about the type of work that may be easiest
given her/his cognitive abilities (e.g., whether the student is more of a hands-
on/visual-spatial learner or a language-based learner). Parents and students may
complete an additional 2-3 sessions to review the results and further explore the
possibilities available. Parents are provided with a report that provides information
about basic strengths/weaknesses, a list of possible academic majors/careers, and
other resources to help determine a tentative plan of action.
