Psychotherapy / Counseling

Siyu Chen and Jasmin Galaviz provide psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and adults.

In working with children and adolescents, psychotherapy often involves working with both the child and family to help the child with emotional/behavioral issues. Treatment may involve teaching strategies for regulating emotions and behavior more effectively.

Children with poor self-esteem are often encouraged to monitor negative thoughts that arise in various situations (e.g., when other children make fun of them, when they receive corrective feedback from their teacher or parents), and are encouraged to replace maladaptive self-statements (eg. “No one likes me!” or “She thinks I’m stupid!”) with healthier statements (eg. “It doesn’t matter what he says, I’m not going to let that bother me…” or “I made a mistake, and that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with me, but I need to pay closer attention to the instructions next time.”).

Social skills training is often helpful for children with poor social skills. Children can be taught more effective behaviors for social situations, both by role-modeling new behaviors, and by role-playing social interactions with the child. Parents are often included in sessions and provided with information about exercises they can engage the child in between sessions to improve the child’s behavior and social skills. Family members are provided with education about various resources that may be available to assist in the child’s treatment.

Psychotherapy sessions are $175. The first session involves an intake, and the cost is $300.
